My name is Paola, but I go by Polly a name my boyfriend came up with 8 years ago. I enjoy reading, watching movies and TV, but don’t ask me what my favourite anything is, because my answer five years ago might be completely different from the answer I give today, so it’s not a fair question.
When I was about 13 years old I wanted to start wearing makeup. Now I realize that 13 is much too young to wear insane amounts of makeup, but thankfully my parents were around to stop my 13 year old self from growing too fast – I was not allowed to wear any until I turned 15. All my family and friends knew that I awaited my 15th birthday to start wearing makeup, so on when it came around most of my presents were makeup kits! As a 15 year old, I didn’t know how to wear it properly and my obsession died down once I got it out of my system. It wasn’t until years later that I picked it up again.
The first youtuber I was obsessed with was Michelle Phan. This was years ago when she was still doing videos out of her parents house. I remember watching video after video of hers. I learned quite a few techniques from her and I learned the purpose of makeup products that I had never heard of before. After that I watched Kandee Johnson and from there my youtube obsession just grew. I loved trying products and different looks. Even my boyfriend saw a difference in how I did my makeup. And he’s a boy! hahaha
I used to get frustrated because I did not have all the right colors to create some of the looks so my boyfriend bought me a Coastal Scents palette, which I still have and occasionally use. After learning a little about makeup and even developing my own techniques I would think of maybe making a video and putting it up, just to see what would happen. But I never did. I’ve always been shy and scared to put myself out there. I am my harshest critic and I think everyone judges me even more harshly that I judge myself.
So for years I just watched videos, not only of makeup gurus but cooking videos, and I even discovered the Vlogbrothers, founders of Nerdfighteria. I like Nerdfighter principles (Decrease World suck, Increase World Awesome) and feel that I have found that I am not the only nerd out there, which gives me the knowledge that I am not as weird as I think I am. This was all online, until I met someone just as weird as I am.
I met Joyce at work a little over a year ago. In that short time we discovered that we were both passionate about a lot of the same things, and one of those things was YouTube. We both confessed a desire to make youtube videos and also a fear to do so. So then we figured, two scared girls maybe make a brave one and we started two channels, one for beauty and one for blogging and while we have many obstacles we are still determined to do this. We have waited too long, why keep waiting?
